.s. consulate that left four americans dead in libya including ambassador chris stevens. a suspect is in custody in tunisia. the u.s. will be able to question him. cnn intelligence correspondent suzanne kelly joins us. what do we know about the suspect and how he was caught? >> we know he was tunisian and he had left libya and gone into turkey. turkish officials detained him and turned him over to tune's authorities. now the u.s. is negotiating to have access to him, to be able to question him. >> when do you think that will happen? >> it could be a matter of weeks. something like this is a process. there are a couple of issues internally within the u.s. that need to be resolved in terms of how the fbi and intelligence agencies will work together to continue to question him. then they have to approach the tunisian authorities. a process there as well. it could be a couple of weeks. >> yesterday we reported on the e-mails that revealed the u.s. officials were aware of possible link between the benghazi attacks and an islamic military group, ansar al sharia. there were new doubts on what those e-m

. in fact, steven tyler, one of them who got let go, today called this bull, said this is like professional wrestling. let be honest, as americans the idea of someone just singing, seen it, done that, bored with it. we like this fighting. you're bringing "the real housewives" to "american idol." they're going to fight. that's what it's about. i think it's to get press, get people to watch the show again, watch the ratings jump. >> i can't do the talent shows. you know how much i love howard stern. i can't even watch that other show. >> "america's got talent." >> i can't. it's boring. but this is definitely interesting. >> that's what this is about. >> let's move on. out of new york city, illusionist david blaine puts on a mesh suit, electricity coarsing around him, three days, no sleep, no food. are you amazed by this stunt? >> amazed? >> under the pavement, the cement, remember that? >> i'm not amazed by this at all. staying awake three days? i have friends who stay awake five days at a time. >> starbucks. >> people who don't eat or drink, stuck outside, they should get the money. david bl

, when there was a facebook posting saying that al qaeda was trying to get ambassador chris stevens on his daily runs. all of that was right out there. how could the executive branch not have known all of that. >> in the moments immediately after the attack. the consulate checked the security video and said there was no sign of a protest there was clear sign of a planned attack. so, everyone through the this process is saying that the exactly what the intelligence community provided us. clearly we need to hear from someone from the cia how much does the public need to know? we are not going to know it after the -- >> interestingly what eflerged that hearing wednesday shirley lamb who works at the department rejected the request for more security? libya. they say though because it was requested for tripoli, not benghazi. so the security wouldn't have gone there. there is all of this finger pointing this morning as to who rejected security. wanted more security. whose department is to blame. i don't know, there is a lot of blame to go around. >> we have a lot of guests coming up, mike

need to do is stop playing politics with this issue. ambassador stevens' own father said today this shouldn't be a political issue. this should be an issue we get to the bottom of for our investigation. we should bring those that did this to justice. >> the deaths are incredibly tragic to everyone in america. i assume you would believe also for the romney campaign, but the question here, you know, when you look at it that they're driving at -- the republican side is driving at is why wasn't there more security, and more to the point, why was there so much bad information coming out about what happened? >> well, look, again, let me go back to this sworn testimony that was given at the hearing. those at the state department said that the very thing that everybody has been saying at every moment in this great tragedy has been the best information that we have when we have it available. we're learning stuff each and every day about what happened. that's what an investigation is supposed to do. let me ask you this. let's figure out what happened, but, you know what, we don't need wi

that was not in place in benghazi at the consulate when ambassador chris stevens was killed. this came up in the vice presidential debate, and biden answered, and then romney answered the following day based on that answer. let me play both of those now and we'll discuss it. >> and they wanted more security. >> well, we weren't told they wanted more security. we did not know they wanted more security. >> he's doubling down on denial. and we need to understand exactly what happened as opposed to people just brushing this aside. when the vice president of the united states directly contradicts the testimony, sworn testimony, of state department officials, american citizens have a right to know just what's going on. and we're going to find out. >> it sounds, governor granholm, you have the vice president and the white house saying the next day, well, it didn't come directly to the white house. there were other people who handle all of that. the white house is saying one thing. the state department another. the white house saying the intelligence community gave them this information. kind of distancing t

be disappointed but not surprised. it was journalists who found ambassador stevens' journal because neither libyan officials nor american officials had gotten to that consulate. time and again, it took the fbi three weeks to get to the consulate itself to do a forensic investigation. the investigation of this on both the american and the libyan side has been absolutely and completely incompetent. the notion that a journalist could find this guy and sit down with him and do an interview before investigators should not surprise us. disappointing, yes. surprising, no. >> as we get more information, sadly raises more and alarming questions. thanks so much. >>> now for how this is playing out politically. paul begala and ari fleischer. so paul, the attack on the benghazi consulate was a big flash point in the last debate. i know you think it's time for these guys to move on. afghanistan, for example. but given the expanded congressional investigations, the lot of questions about the administration's handling, how much benghazi do you think will be in the next debate? >> i do think it's a certainty. it

, because of security. and this from steven hayes of the weekly standard, which i think we should talk about. he writes in the magazine, the man suspected of organizing the attack on the u.s. consulate spent two leisurely hours sipping a strawberry frap on a patio and boasted he wasn't even questioned by the united states. it raises an obvious question. why is it more than a month after the attack a reporter can spend more than two hours with the alleged mastermind and no u.s. agent has approached him? >> well, by the way, president obama still did take out osama bin laden, and there's no question about that. and the leadership of al qaeda in many ways has been decimated, has been severely beat back. that doesn't mean that al qaeda has disappeared from the world, and the administration has never claimed such a thing. no question process has been made. it's chaos on the ground. for every report about one group participating, there's another report that it wasn't organized, it was a terrorist group but not necessarily linked to al qaeda. there is so much confusing information. and the reason t

from john franklin stevens. he has down syndrome and is a global messenger for the special olympics. i'm pleased to have him live with me tonight along with the ceo of special olympics. welcome to you both. frank, let me start with you. i found your speech this morning that you wrote was extremely moving. you heard ann coulter there trying to insist that the word retard is not offensive. what was your reaction to that? >> well, the word retard is offensive and should not be -- should not be a symbol for someone who is dumb and shallow. if they wanted to use me as a symbol, use it as a symbol for someone who fights adversity. >> and, tim, when you heard her getting very agitated about it, and insisted she would carry on using the word, no worse than moron, imbecile, creton, whatever. i think retard, in particular, has been adopted by people who want to be offensive to people with disability, more than any of the other words, therefore, has a special significance that people are aware of. >> i think the question isn't which word is worse. i think the reason so many people like frank have

: well, woods will tell these investigators, the house committee, that he met with stevens all the time. >> right. bill: so what he's going to do now, he will lay out a story and situation and scenario and where stevens all likelihood expressed danger he felt to his own life, right? that makes sense. >> absolutely. i don't want to sound overly cynical here but frankly washington, d.c. appears to be the black hole of investigations. where all investigations go to fade away and disappear. we get caught up in some other moment of outrage. but this is not, this is not a typical process. they should and i would hope, that they have, already, demanded all the cable traffic that bounces between benghazi and tripoli and washington, d.c., the state department headquarters, for the past year, ever since they set up the consulate in benghazi. get all the cable traffic. you review that. then you review any cable traffic that was related by the department of security at state department and the security team led by lieutenant colonel wood and get any of that information. bill: what that does, that t

one month since the deaths of ambassador christopher stevens and three other americans in benghazi. now a new call to add those responsible to the u.s. foreign terrorist list. house homeland security committee chairman peter king is calling on secretary of state hillary clinton to take action. chief intelligence correspondent catherine herridge has been following the story since the beginning. she is joining us live from washington. >> reporter: thank you, jenna. one theme dominated at hearings yesterday on capitol hill. it was that official washington was preoccupied with reducing the number of american security personnel at the consulate and replacing them with libyan guards even after a series of attacks on diplomats. for the military and state department diplomatic security personnel on the ground a terrorist strike according to the testimony seemed inevitable give the escalating violence. requests for more security rejected in the bureaucratic nightmare of political washington. >> it's not the hardships, it is not the gunfire, it is not the threats. it is dealing and fighting

chris stevens. biden is saying that as new facts have become available, u.s. intelligence has changed what it's telling the obama administration. let's listen. >> as they learn more facts about exa what happened, they changed their assessment. that's why there is also an investigation headed by tom pickering, a leading diplomat from the reagan years, who is doing investigation as to whether or not there are any lapses, what the lapses were, so they will never happen again. >> and they wanted more security there. >> well, we weren't told they wanted more security. we did not know they wanted more security. >> we hear the pronoun he's using, it is we. many of the -- many agree the bo bone of contention is the we were not told the u.s. diplomats needed more security before the fatal attack on september 11th. romney didn't say which state department official that be with. he didn't say specifically which testimony. let's start with that. can you discern what romney was talking about when he said biden contradicted that sworn testimony? >> well, i would say number one that is probably a r

ever since the tragic events of terrorists killing ambassador chris stevens and the other three americans. i knew chris stevens, i worked with him, he was a great diplomat, a loyal american. we all mourn his loss and have sympathy to his family, but the disturbing thing is that the administration has changed the story time and time and time again about what happened. ultimately the american people want transparency, want to know the facts. they can make their own decisions, and the white house owes that to the american people. bill: what are you advising mitt romney to say about this issue tonight? >> i think there's two points. one, there should be an effort to get transparency from president obama of what he knew and when he knew it, and why they didn't open up and have candor with the american people, and then the other line of inquiry is the fact that this was evidence that his so-called success on the war on terror wasn't so successful. targeted killings alone cannot solve this problem. you need a broader strategy, and governor romney outlined that in his speech at bmi last

for benghazi. three days after ambassador stevens and four other americans were murdered in libya the u.s. embassy in tunisia was ransacked by protesters, smashing windows and throwing rocks and lighting fires. the american school in tunis was also targeted. >> same organization. so might not have been the same people involved but same organization. clearly they decided to try to take advantage of the momentum of 9/11. clearly that was their case. and they had moderate success. >> reporter: also this morning republican senator john mccain saying that secretary of state hillary clinton has damaged her reputation by those initial statements about the video and her role in this scandal. >> i have always admired secretary clinton and frankly i'm, i'm really a little bit saddened because she is really harming her reputation by engaging in this incredible cover-up, throwing herself under the bus. a couple of times she's done that. >> reporter: also facing growing scrutiny are the cia director david petraeus there on the right and the director of national intelligence, james clapper, the natio

"endeavour" embarking on its final mission, a 12-mile journey through the streets of los angeles. it will travel from los angeles international airport to its new home at the california science center. there will be plenty of time for photo ops. it's expected to take 46 hours to make that 12-mile trip. we're there with a live report for you. >> all right. if you were busy watching the debate and missed baseball. man, there was baseball l

killed foubenghazi that killed our ambassador chris stevens and others. the this is mike rogers, listen. >> i argued the administration made serious mistakes whether they highlighted the video, escalated its credibility to the presidential level and then took it on tv in pakistan with u.s. taxpayer dollars. i think those were all serious mistakes that we are paying the price for, and it was because of that view of what they thought their intelligence, at least what they wanted it to be, not what it was. bill: two critical things he said in this. i want to talk to new york congressman peter king about it, the chairman of the homeland security committee. good morning, sir. >> good morning, bill. bill: they highlighted the video escalating the credibility on the presidential level. what do you think of that? >> i a agree fully with chairman rogers. i'm on the intelligence committee with mike, he's a great chairman. he's been right on this from the start. the president took something which was a petty issue and elevated it, gave it a credibility it didn't deserve, somehow put it on defense

the lives of four americans. ambassador chris stevens, two navy seals there to protect him and a state department staffer. catherine herridge is live in washington. catherine, tell us more what he learned yesterday. >> reporter: thank you, allison and good morning. lawmakers are questioning whether the president's political agenda drove to security situation on the ground that led to the death of four americans. i would note the seals were not there to protect the ambassador. they were there to on a separate mission. as fox reported there was no demonstration at the consulate in benghazi fanned youtube video was not the reason for. that point was made abundantly clear at hearing. >> there were no protest. state department and others have that video. speaking of video, the one in california made by an individual out there for a period of time also clearly had no direct effect on this attack. >> when i was in libya, a good part of the day, never once did a person ever mention a video. never. >> reporter: these these newt documents at hearing and four hours of testimony showed a pattern o
